Madeleine police files under wraps Last Updated: Sunday, 03 January 2010, 05:32 GMT- Search: Madeleine McCann files
British police files on the hunt for Madeleine McCann will not be released unless those behind her disappearance are brought to justiceThousands of British police files detailing the hunt for Madeleine McCann will not be released unless those behind her disappearance are brought to justice. Senior Leicestershire Police officers have remained tight-lipped about their role co-ordinating the search for the toddler since she vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort in May 2007. But analysts at the force have drawn up a list detailing the mass of information they have gathered and considered whether they would ever release any of it to the general public. The paperwork includes everything from correspondence with Government ministers, minutes of police meetings, details of leads and sightings to copies of letters from the McCann family. Leicestershire Police said they will not release any information while the inquiry is ongoing and will never reveal the tactics of their investigation. But internal documents suggest some papers may eventually be published. They stated: "Anything in relation to the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will not be released whilst it remains ongoing. "Consideration may be given to releasing certain material, ie, that which would not reveal police tactics, when the circumstances surrounding Madeleine's disappearance are fully known and the person/people involved have been brought to justice and a suitable period for any appeal has elapsed." Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared on May 3 2007 from Praia da Luz, nine days before her fourth birthday. An investigation into her disappearance was carried out by the Portuguese police, supported by Leicestershire Police. The force is responsible for co-ordinating British inquiries under the codename Operation Task.

McCanns Return To Portugal For Libel Case 11:05am UK, Monday January 11, 2010
Neal Walker, Sky News Online
Kate and Gerry McCann will return to Portugal later for the libel trial of the former policeman who led the investigation into their daughter's disappearance. The McCanns say any damages they are awarded will fund private investigators
The couple launched legal action against former Portuguese detective Goncalo Amaral after he published a book questioning their account of what happened to Madeleine.
Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, will fly to Lisbon today ahead of the three-day trial, which is due to start at the main civil court in the Portuguese capital tomorrow.
The couple plan to attend all the hearings, but do not intend to go back to the Algarve resort where Madeleine vanished more than two-and-a-half years ago.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "I can confirm that Kate and Gerry McCann will be returning to Portugal on Monday to attend the resumption of the Amaral trial on Tuesday.
"The details of their travel plans and itinerary will remain private at their request." Madeleine was nearly four years old when she went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3, 2007, while her parents dined with friends nearby.
Four months after her disappearance, Mr and Mrs McCann were made 'arguidos', or formal suspects, but this was lifted when the investigation was shelved in July 2008.
Mr Amaral led the investigation in the first six months following Madeleine's disappearance.
But he was taken off the case in October 2007 after criticising the British police in a newspaper interview. Mr Amaral was taken off case
In his book Maddie: The Truth Of The Lie, which was published in July 2008, Mr Amaral claimed that Madeleine was dead, and questioned the McCanns' account that she was abducted.
A Portuguese judge granted an injunction in September last year banning further sale or publication of the book.
The former policeman was also prohibited from repeating his claims about Madeleine or her parents.
The McCanns travelled to Lisbon for the opening of the libel trial in December, but the hearing was adjourned until this week after Mr Amaral's lawyer failed to turn up for health reasons.
The couple have previously said any money awarded in damages by the courts would go towards paying for private investigators to look for their daughter.
:: Sky News Online will be covering the libel case with line-by-line live updates from inside the courtroom in Portugal.

James Lawton Master Social Worker from Gloversville NY has made some references about Madeline Mccann's case. He claims he was near her hotel when she disapeared. I did forward this information along to le. He did have it listed on his website he has since took it down. This man also has some strange facts about Kellisue Ackernecht as well.

Re James Lawton, Master Social Worker, it seems that his Madeleine-related piece is still on his site. I read through (very long & many repetitions) & he does not actually say that he was near the McCann’s hotel - ?? - his text within the 1st quarter of page says (link below): “When Madeleine McCann was found missing May 3, 2007 I was in Quito, Ecuador. I flew back Quito to Miami May 5, 2007 to soon read the of the disappearance on the web.” I thought I would add some of his points on what he thought may have happened though… if abducted, & if a death & buried – he says: “an example of abduction at the time of window of opportunity when Madeleine was ungarded early black hours there was a "slack tide" at Praia da Luz and sister fishing villiage Burgau where the Atlantic ocean waters calmed to still giving time to row out silently to a spot where motors could be turned on and then to the mother ship that took Madelein to for instance Portuguese speaking Brazil where of the worlds ten most wealthy men most come from. The price of Madeleine both parents doctors to a wealthy Brazilian husband and wife one half million dollars.” “bury the body somewhere up in the Federal Park hills with its numerous Roman origin copper and gold mining shafts” (10miles away). Re Robert Murat, following the reporter Lori Campbell’s report that Murat was very suspect, along with Jane Tanner first saying Murat was the man walking with a child towards his villa, James Lawton then says: “a "criminal" who said Murat had sex with dogs and cats when he was young and then tortured them to death. Giving this information to an England profilist the profilist got back to Goncalo Amaral with 90% chance Robert Murat was the murderer of Madeleine McCann.” What I found interesting re below, is the fountain in front of the Murat villa, as I believe Gale St John mentioned circular something & a fountain: “Murat villa one block distance from the McCann apartment by the small circular pretty city park with fountain in front of the Murat villa”. Then re Rachel Mampilly’s statement differing from her husband Matthew Oldfied (also different to what we have heard/read, that Matthew checked & only saw the twins & because of where Madeleine’s bed was could not see her) : “Rachael Mampilly is from southern Africa and talks in the English jargon of Jamaica, Dominica which was recorded in her jargon english her statement. Dr Matthew Oldfield then entered both the McCann childrens bedroom and the bedroom of the parents but the parents bedroom did not light up by vehicle lights and he could not see if Madeleine was there in her parents bed (in case the twins had been crying is why he would have checked the parents bedroom) and standing one minute in the childrens bedroom a vehicle through the blinds curtains lit up the bedroom and he could see the twins but Madeleine was not in her bed. The door was slightly opened but he did not think too much of this as Madeliene probably opened it leaving for the parents bedroom with the twins crying a hypothesis. To reiterate the parents bedroom was to dark to see anything so he guessed Madeleine was sleeping there and all was fine and left.” “In the original statements given to the Portugal Policia Judiscaria (PJ) Dr Matthew Oldfield and wife Rachael Mampilly Oldfield disagree by one hour as to when they arrived at the Mark Warner Ocean Club Tapas restaurant. Husband says it was at 7:45 P.M and wife says 8:45 P.M. They had been at tennis untill 7:00 P.M. Tennis concluded both Oldfields and McCanns were at the Tapas around 7:45 which would have included no shower but Rachael Mampilly Oldfield says they took a shower and arrived 8:45 P.M.” http://www.nylicsocialworkeramazonas.com/id237.html

6:16pm UK, Tuesday January 12, 2010 Andy Jack, Sky News Online A report into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, signed by a police chief, said she had died in the family's holiday apartment, a court has been told. The lawyer in charge of the original inquiry into Madeleine's disappearance said the report was signed by Tavares De Almeida, who was chief inspector of police at the time Madeleine vanished.
Jose Magalhaes e Menezes also revealed that text messages sent by Kate and Gerry McCann were intercepted by police who were suspicious about their role in their daughter's disappearance.
But the texts were not considered as part of the investigation because a judge would not allow it.
Mr Menezes was the first witness called at a libel trial brought by the McCanns against former police chief Goncalo Amaral. His book claimed Madeleine had died in the family's apartment in the holiday resort of Praia da Luz in May 2007.
But Mr Menezes said he thought the probability of Madeleine being alive was 50/50.
He said the decision to designate the McCanns 'arguidos' - or suspects - was taken by police after sniffer dogs brought to Portugal from England had carried out their searches.
Giving evidence, Mr de Almeida said that the dogs identified blood and the smell of a human body inside the dining room of the holiday flat and in the car the McCanns were using.
The animals also found a scent on a piece of cloth in a flat rented by the McCanns after they left the apartment.
One of the dogs was in a nervous, excitable state, and wanted to get into the room, according to a report by British police, said Mr de Almeida.
No-one can be allowed to say that our daughter can't be found without very good evidence. Gerry McCann
Mr de Almeida accused both the British authorities and British police of hindering the investigation by withholding information.
Next to give evidence was police inspector Ricardo Paiva. He was the family liaison officer but was taken off the case at the request of the McCanns.
Asked if he ever got the impression from the McCanns that they thought Madeleine could be dead. He said yes.
The McCanns are seeking £1m compensation and a final ruling preventing Mr Amaral from repeating the claims he made about them.
The McCanns' lawyer told the court that the couple were prepared to give evidence but only after Mr Amaral had done so.
The case may now last longer than its expected three days because a new witness - named as Luis Frois - is being called by the McCann team.
Mr Amaral was in charge of the investigation launched when Madeleine McCann disappeared shortly before her fourth birthday.
He was taken off the case the following October after criticising British police in a newspaper interview.
Mr and Mrs McCanns' status as arguidos was lifted when the investigation was shelved in July 2008.
The same month, Mr Amaral published a book called Maddie: The Truth Of The Lie, in which he called into question the McCanns' account that she had been abducted.
Arriving in Lisbon, Mr McCann said: "No-one can be allowed to say that our daughter can't be found without very good evidence. That's what this court case is about."
Mrs McCann said: "We're looking for justice."
The couple, both 41, from Rothley, Leicestershire, have said that any damages awarded to them would go towards paying for private investigators to look for their daughter.
Also, im not sure if this is true:
The Portuguese detective being sued by Kate and Gerry McCann over his allegations about their role in their daughter’s disappearance has been invited to give a talk in Britain. Goncalo Amaral, who led the police investigation, is due to speak to a conference next month in Nottingham organised by the Madeleine Foundation, which claims the missing girl was not abducted.

Just lifted this off twitter.
"Mr Amaral added that he wrote the book to protect his honour and set the record straight." 43 minutes ago from web
THAT IS A LIE... if this is the case then how come he also wrote a similar book about the disappearance of Joanna Cipriano - was that also to protect his honour!? (the beating up bit). Actually that was just me being sarcastic. There is something fishy. 2 missing kids, same policeman, both times ??

@ CL: it's very fishy indeed. Let's all hope and pray that the REAL TRUTH will emerge soon from this pile of vile cr*p. The McCanns really don't deserve this. They have not been more 'irresponsible' in leaving their kids alone for having dinner, than any of the other guests at the Marc Warner Ocean Club in the previous years, who have made use of the 'baby listening service'. If the McCanns should be on trial for neglect, then bring ALL the other parents at the holiday complex (who did the same and still have their children!) to trial too !!!!!!!!!

well said - i got really angry today when i read some lynching by joe public on the latest news.. a lot slagging off kate for not crying, and for leaving their kids in the first place. I think by now they know they made a terrible mistake. they do not need reminding.
I wrote back in anger and pointed out that we all take risks every day with our children. We make a risk assessment based on the environment and circumstance. For example: how much time does one need to cross a busy road if one is on ones own vs helping an old lady or young child across. One makes a judgement and not always the right one. I am sure the mccanns were feeling relaxed and thought - we are in portugal, a child friendly hotel, we are so close by, if something happens someone will get us. everyone is looking out for our kids.. its a family friendly community.... and so on..
Although i'd never take quite that kind of risk, i do know that once my son is asleep nothing would wake him. Also safety in numbers. If my son was in trouble, my older daughter would come and find me. In fact I am guilty of making a potentially bad decision today due to being snowed in. I had to make a risk assessment of whether to make my kids walk 3/4 mile in the snow up a steep hill in freezing cold to the car to take my husband 10 minutes down the road to the station. I decided to leave them at home because i was sure they would be fine, i gave them strict instructions, they know my mobile, i called to check on them. I made a risk assesment based on many things. my daughter is very sensible, they were engrossed in a film on TV, i'd only be x amount of time, what if i got stuck in the snow, well i had plan b and c up my sleeve with neighbours etc... but still it was a risk that could have backfired.
anyway, I feel for the mccanns so much right now. No one has produced a body so how can they say she is dead. There was no body with joanna cipriano either yet amaral and his buddies confidently decided she had been murdered by her parents... He seems very arrogant. macho, etc..
I am really hoping like you that something is going to leak out over this trial.. i have a feeling it will.
Best wishes, CL

Portuguese police 'ignored hundreds of sightings' in search for Madeleine McCann

Madeleine McCann: Sightings of the missing girl were filed as 'not relevant'
Portuguese police faced growing pressure to reopen the Madeleine McCann investigation yesterday, amid claims they ignored potential sightings of the missing girl.
Detectives have refused to investigate hundreds of clues about the disappearance, including photographs of children said to bear a 'shocking' resemblance to the blonde youngster.
They include a cluster of sightings in Italy and Spain which could hold the key to solving the mystery and ending the years of heartache suffered by her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.
But instead they have gone unchecked, marked as 'irrelevant' after the case was shelved, and left to gather dust in a police archive.
The McCanns' private detectives, who are continuing the search for the missing child, did not even know the dossier existed until a Portuguese policeman let slip a reference to it during a legal hearing.
Inspector Ricardo Paiva said police had received hundreds of tip-offs from witnesses convinced they had seen Madeleine and knew where she was being held.
They sent in photographs of children and of locations which they believed were being used by her abductor, believing that police would investigate their claims.
But arrogant detectives were so convinced by their own theory that Madeleine died on the night she disappeared, and that her parents faked her abduction, that they made no attempt to check the sightings.
The McCanns' lawyer, Isabel Duarte, has seen the dossier. She said every single statement had the same phrase scrawled across it: 'This is not relevant to the investigation.'
She said: 'I was shocked at how much was in there, and that absolutely nothing had been done to follow any of it up.
'Every piece of information was treated the same way - Ricardo Paiva writes on it "This is not relevant to the investigation".
'He is the witness who declared in court that he believed Madeleine is dead. You cannot find a person when you are not looking for them.' Gerry and Kate McCann
Unaware: Gerry and Kate McCann, pictured being mobbed by the media this week, were not told about many of the potential clues to their daughter's whereabouts
Mr Paiva gave evidence at a legal hearing over a controversial book, written by his former boss, Goncalo Amaral.
He admitted that Mr Amaral's insistence that Madeleine died on May 3, 2007, meant the police investigation had failed to consider other options.
Mrs Duarte said they had not investigated any tip-offs since the case was officially shelved, in July 2008, when the McCanns were cleared as official suspects in the investigation.
She said information had continued to pour in from potential witnesses and even from other police forces in Europe, but was ignored, even when the clues including photographs of girls who looked like Madeleine.
The lawyer said: 'Some of them are very, very similar to Madeleine. But Kate and Gerry had never been shown them.
'There was information from Leicestershire Police, French police, Spanish police, and again nothing was done about it.
'Kate and Gerry did not even know this file existed until this week. I am going to give a copy of the file to them so that their private investigation team can follow up the information in it.
'But I am angry because it is the Portuguese investigative police who should be doing this job.
‘They have the power and the capability to do it. It is they who should be doing it, not Kate and Gerry.'
Mr and Mrs McCann, both 41, will discover next week if they have won their court bid to keep an injunction which bans Mr Amaral from repeating his vile claims that their daughter died in a 'tragic accident' and that they faked her abduction to cover up the death.
Their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said they had been shocked to discover the full extent of the Portuguese police's failure to investigate Madeleine's disappearance.
He said it had confirmed their worst fears about the investigation, saying: 'They were shocked when they went through the file and saw what was in it, and even worse what little had been done to follow any of it up.
'Kate and Gerry have consistently known that potential fresh information was not being properly followed up, if at all.
'The tragedy of this case, which once again has been highlighted by this, is what little was done to find Madeleine.
‘Kate and Gerry will have to do it themselves as they have been doing. They are the only ones looking for her.'
Mr Paiva said he could not discuss the case. He said: 'I cannot comment, in accordance with Portuguese law.'

SKY HAS REPORTED THAT AL OF THE REPORTED , UNINVESTIGATED SIGHTINGS AND TIP OFFS ARE BEING SENT TO THE UK TO BE INVESTIGATED. THE MCCANNS ARE IN SHOCK AT JUST HOW MUCH WAS IGNORED. I THINK THIS NEWS IS A SMOKE SCREEN TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM THE HOLIE GREIG COVER UP. I THINK WE ARE BEING KEPT SWEET AS THERE IS AN ELECTION LOOMING. I WOULDNT BE SUPRISED IF SHE WAS HAPPILY REUNITED WITH HER FAMILY JUST AS VOTING STARTS.
